I had three primary goals at the start of the program. The first was to simply learn about the program and its requirements. I only recently developed an interest in teaching English to native speakers of foreign languages. My first contact with the community was through a volunteer ESL book club at my local library during which I came to realize that the learners needed more expertise than I possessed to understand and grow.
My second goal was to improve my skills. In learning more about TESOL, I realized that this was something I wanted to pursue. I committed to the certification process and completed the classes in quick succession. The classes helped me improve my skills as I applied lessons in real time during my weekly book club meetings where I actively seek to enact the six principles of exemplary teaching English learners. I have received positive feedback from the learners and adult literacy coordinator.
My third goal was to explore the possibility of making a career in TESOL. This remains under development. It is my objective to pursue a career in TESOL. A classmate shared information about a local opening. I plan to apply and continue to explore online and other in-person opportunities.
My interest and commitment has not wavered and I am on tract to completion.
My goals for the next three years are to 1) Obtain my TESOL certificate, 2) Expand my understanding and implementation of technology in an educational setting, 3) Establish a network within the TESOL community and 4) Continue education/career development through involvement in organizations like CATESOL (California Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).
These courses brought home the fact that the best teachers never stop learning about themselves, students, language. technology and the world. They have helped me grow personally and, I hope someday, professionally. My ultimate goal is to keep on learning.
